A special Historic Rural Cemetery Tour by bus.

Attendees will board Colorado County Transit buses at the Library at 1pm and will be transported to the Ijams Cemetery, the Borden Cemetery and the Osage Cemetery.  At each location, a trustee (Jim Kearney, Nancy Klauber, and Mary Anne Pickens) will give a presentation about the cemetery and the early settlers of the area.

The entire program will last approximately 3 hours and will cost $10 to cover the cost of the buses.

There is very limited parking at two of the rural cemeteries so we do not recommend taking personal vehicles.  The Texas wildflowers will hopefully be in full bloom at that time.

Please reserve/purchase tickets in advance at Nesbitt Memorial Library in Columbus.

We hope to feature different cemeteries each spring in future years and we will continue to have the Live Oaks and Dead Folks Cemetery Tour in Columbus in November.

FYI--The buses are wheelchair accessible and temperature controlled.

Riders of the Orphan Train

Nesbitt Memorial Library, Columbus, TX

Tuesday, March 22  7pm!

This multimedia program is the official outreach program for the National Orphan Train Complex in Concordia, Kansas. This program was made possible in part with a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Magnolia Oaks Bed and Breakfast and Beckey’s Cafe. Since 1998, the program has been presented in over 500 libraries, museums and schools.

Presenters Alison Moore and Philip Lancaster have gathered stories from original riders and their families from across the country. The Nesbitt Memorial Library archives contains an original book Josephine’s Granddaughter: the Remembrances of Agnes Schenk David by Elizabeth Herzik. Her grandmother arrived in Weimar on an orphan train in 1906 and was raised in Dubina.

More than likely, there are more families in the area that had adopted children from an Orphan Train.

The program is appropriate for children, teens and adults and is free of charge.
